The Bandera Bulldogs powerlifting teams competed at a high level at a meet at Holy Cross on Saturday, Feb. 22, with the Lady Bulldogs finishing second in the competition while the boys team came in sixth in a large field, the teams’ coach reported.
Caitlin Watson finished first in the 123-pound weight class, while Kylee Hensley finished second in the 148-pound weight class, and Anna Freeman finished second in the 165-pound class.
Other top finishers for the Lady Bulldogs were Makaya Garca, who took third place in the 97-pound weight class, and Ashley Grodman, who won sixth in the 114-pound weight class. It was the last qualifying meet for regional for the girls’ team.
On the boys’ side, Colton Perkins came in third in the 275-pound weight class, and Brian Burns finished fourth in the 148-pound weight class.
Several members of the girl’s team had personal records at the meet, Powerlifting Coach Manuel Martinez said.
Qualifying for the regional meet on March 6 at Edcouch Elsa were Watson, Kimberly Salinas, Hensley, Penelope Garcia and Freeman.
Martinez said all five have a great shot at making the state championship if they hit their weights at the regional meet.
Watson is ranked No. 1 in state in her weight division, while Salinas is ranked third in the same division.
The boys’ team will travel to San Antonio on Friday, Feb. 28, for the Texas Strength System meet, the team’s last regional qualifying meet.
Ethan Brown is currently ranked No. 1 in the region in the 123-pouond weight class.
Burns, Perkins and Zakary Widenor will all fight for a regional berth on Friday, officials said.
