Old Glory stands for freedom and equality for all

The flag of Lincoln carried by Union soldiers during the Civil War in their fight against Confederate Democrats was a symbol for all who wished to abolish slavery. For soldiers, white and black, it was the greatest honor to be chosen to carry the flag in battle even though they were unarmed and knew they would almost certainly die. But these men also understood the fight they were in, even their lives, was worth the cost. The American flag, to them, represented freedom, hope, equality and prosperity. Their belief in something greater than themselves is what drove them, is what drove their willing self-sacrifice.
