Lately we’ve seen many examples of how one vote can have enormous power: it can throw the highest levels of government into dysfunctional chaos; it can hold up military and diplomatic appointments so that our national security is compromised. A tiny percentage of voters can, under the right circumstances, change the outcome for a very large percentage of citizens. The same few votes can be used to harm and punish those who fail to cooperate with the more powerful faction of their chosen political party. There’s even a word for it: the verb “to primary” someone means to set them up for an electoral loss by taking advantage of the small number of eligible voters who typically turn out for primary elections.
