The Lady Bulldogs fell to the third-ranked team in state 4A competition, the Fredericksburg Lady Billies, on January 10.

The Lady Bulldogs worked hard to gain points against the Billies but could not compete with Fredericksburg’s exceptional threepoint shooting.

The Lady Bulldogs showed a lot of improvement when setting their screens and had a quickness that Fredericksburg lacked. The Bulldogs could not make the baskets needed to keep up with Fredericksburg’s scoring.

In the first quarter, the Lady Billies put the first basket on the scoreboard at the six-minute mark. Bandera started out with a tight defense and fast game play. Freshman Brittany Grabs put up a basket in the paint that brought the score to two for the Bulldogs and 6 for the Billies. Shortly after, Gabby Barrera put up three quick shots for six points. The quarter ended with the Lady Bulldogs at 8 and the Lady Billies at 24 points.

Grabs started off the second quarter with a steal. She is showing quite a bit of potential and growth as the season progresses. Senior Stella Calderon came through with a three-point shot to raise Bandera’s score to 11 points. Sophomore Carly Serene made a clutch rebound and Calderon drove to the basket for 2. Calderon also drew a foul but could not make her free throw. Senior Summer Haby made a three pointer from the right side of the key bringing the score to 16 for the Bulldogs to 38 for the Billies as both teams filed into the locker room for the half.

The Lady Bulldogs came out for the third quarter with a gritty glint in their eyes. Grabs pulled a rebound out of Fredericksburg’s hands and made a shot while drawing a foul. The score was Bandera 18 to Fredericksburg’s 40. Junior Madelyn Garza stole a Fredericksburg pass. The Lady Bulldogs lost possession of the ball several times in the third quarter due to their careless passing skills. Barrera lined up for a three-point shot and made it. The quarter ended with Bandera at 21 points to Fredericksburg’s 61 points.

The last quarter, Barrera started out with a steal from Fredericksburg and created a fast break. She drew a foul but could not put it in the basket. Klein made a good rebound for the Bulldogs. Coach Oyola called a time out at 3:42 to bring the team into the loop for the end of the game. Barrera put up another two pointer, but the Lady Bulldogs seemed to be out of gas. All the fast game play earlier had worn the Lady Bulldogs down by the midpoint of the 4th quarter. The final score was Bandera 23 to Fredericksburg’s 77. This drops the Lady Bulldogs to last place in district with an overall record of 12-16.
