Angelo State University’s Cheer Team captured two national titles and finished second in a third contest at the United Spirit Association USA Collegiate Championships in Anaheim, California, the university announced in a press release this month.

The co-ed team claimed first place in the Band Chant Contest and in the Situational Sideline Contest, while winning second place in the Fight Song Contest during the Game Day events at the championships.

It marked the third straight year ASU’s cheer team has been crowned a national champion. In 2018 and 2019, it won the championship in the Show Cheer Division, the release said.

The team is coached by Kaylee King and her graduate assistant, Lauren Ortiz of Medina.

The 25-member team has four members from the Bandera area – Camille Cardwell and Idalis Olvedo of Kerrville and Kristofer Kramer and Taylor Sustaita of San Antonio.

The 2020 championships were held Feb. 15-16 and featured teams from dozens of colleges and universities throughout the U.S. competing in a variety of divisions, including Game Day, Show Cheer, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Pom-Pom and Mascot.
