Museum of Western Art ranks fifth in nation

The Museum of Western Art in Kerrville was listed as the fifth in the “Top 10 Western Art Museums of 2021.” by True West Magazine, a 68-year-old publicatoin presenting true stories of Old West adventure, culture and preservation.

“We are honored to be the only museum in Texas receiving this designation among such a stellar group of western art museums,” said Dr. Darrell Beauchamp Ed.D, Executive Director of The Museum of Western Art. “We are grateful to True West Magazine for their commitment to promote interest in the talented western artists of yesterday and today who capture our nation’s western heritage through art.”

The complete top ten list was published in the magazine’s September 2021 issue, which is now available for purchase.

The Brinton Museum of Big Horn, Wyoming, took top honors.

True West officials considered hundreds of museums that celebrate the art of the American West and paid tribute to the top ten that “do an especially outstanding job of presenting and showcasing the legacy of the West.”

Nine-time Spur Award-winning writer Johnny D. Boggs and the editors of True West selected the winners for this annual award, based on extensive travels, research and firsthand experiences in visiting dozens of Western museums each year.

“These Western art museums are important in capturing and presenting the West, in a variety of styles, media and approaches,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “In doing so, they keep the Old West alive.”

The Museum of Western art is located at 1550 Bandera Hwy in Kerrville and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
