Academic Decathlon Team strong at meet

Competing against 5A and 6A schools at the Corpus Christi Carroll High School Practice Meet on Friday, Jan. 10, the Bandera High School Academic Decathlon Team brought home a second-place overall trophy and won first place in the Super Quiz, Bandera Independent School District officials said.

Team Captain Hannah Bates said, “It is nice to have a team that works well together. Our team has demonstrated that it can compete head-to-head against large schools.”

Bandera High is a 4A school.

Bates received high scoring recognition with a third -place overall Scholastic score.

Three newcomers to the decathlon team also received recognition as high-scoring individuals. Cyrus Mendez placed third overall in the Varsity division; Christian McKnelly placed third overall in the Honors division and Samuel Nimmrichter received a first overall in the Varsity division.

The divisions in the decathlon competition are determined by students’ grade-point-averages.

Team members medaling in the individual competitions were Bates, bronze, Mendez, silver and Nimmrichter, gold, in Social Science; Samantha Rubalcava, bronze, Mendez, bronze, and Nimmrichter, bronze, in Mathematics; McKnelly, bronze, Megan Mize, bronze, Catherine Molina, silver, Nimmrichter, gold, and Bates, gold, in Art, and Bates, bronze, McKnelly, silver, and Nimmrichter, gold, in Economics.

Also medaling were Mendez, silver, and McKnelly, gold, in Music; Mendez, silver, Nimmrichter, gold, and Bates, gold, in Science; Nimmrichter, bronze, Catherine Molina, gold, and Bates, gold, in Literature; and Molina, bronze, in Speech.

In addition to medaling, team members brought home 16 fourth, fifth and sixth-place ribbons, officials said.

The BHS Academic Decathlon Team will compete in regional and state competitions in the spring.
