Thank you, Mike Stiborik and the community volunteers who recently picked up 110 bags of trash from our Bandera county roadsides. And thank you, Evelyn Snyder, for your letter to the editor urging county commissioners not to abandon plans for a recycling program. There is growing sentiment throughout the county that enough is enough and in this case I’m referring to Bandera’s roadside trash problem. We can each do our part individually but as a focused community with spokespersons like Mike and Evelyn and a semi-truckload of volunteers and conscientious businesses and local organizations, Bandera county can conquer the roadside trash problem and make responsible recycling a reality.
Read moreOn August 10, 1977 David Berkowitz was arrested and charged with killing 8 and wounding 7 people. He claimed he was following a voice that instructed him to kill, the voice coming from a neighbors’ dog named Sam. Thus he was called “Son of Sam.” What voices are we hearing today? Voices come to us from books we read, magazines, television, computers, social media, and friends. We hear voices telling us to eat rich foods in large quantities, which often lead to obesity. We hear voices telling us that it is great fun to drink alcoholic beverages to excess, which often leads to alcoholism. We hear voices that tell us that commitment to marriage is bad and living together without marriage is the norm today. And one may argue that as long as no one is hurt, what difference does it make?

Read moreAs a Bandera Democrat, I want to thank the gentleman who took the time and effort to remove red paint from the TXDOT sign designating a stretch of road cleaned periodically by the Bandera Democratic Party. No matter his motivation, it was an act of decency performed by a member of an opposition political party. It reminded many of us that we may disagree on issues, but we are all members of this county and can work together for the common good. In that regard, the coat drive recently conducted by different groups in this county, including the Democratic and Republican Parties, also serves as a positive model. Those who will be warmer this week as the chill sets in, probably could care less if they are wearing a Democrat or Republican coat….the reality is it’s a warm coat. That is the good in my title.
Read moreThere is no question Democrats are under attack in Texas. Democratic headquarters in Austin and New Braunfels have been assaulted. One was firebombed. Security cameras at both sites recorded the incidents. The footage made national news.

If we accept a definition found in Wikipedia that “politics” is a set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, it seems evident that the more people affected, the more challenging the decisions can become.
