Medina tennis team has good season

Posted in:

We had a good year, although few in numbers.

The team only had 5 Jr. High athletes participate; Ben Hinds, Charles Baker, Nick Lichtenberg, Ella Castillo, and Taylor Guadarama.

In JH we had meets at Leakey, Sabinal, Utopia, Uvalde, and OLH. We won 50 percent of our matches, which I believe is very good considering my kids hardly ever came off of the court.

Noted JH players were Charles Baker, Nick Lichtenberg, and Ella Castillo.

Taylor Guadarama improved dramatically toward the end of the season despite having an injured wrist. Charles Baker and Taylor Guadarama did very well at the district meet. Ella Castillo and Nick Lichtenberg battled hard against some very good competition at the district meet.

On the Varsity side the team members were Emily Zirkel, Hailey Grassie, Elizabeth Gibbs, Ashanti Williams, Ashlyn Turner, and Autumn Turner on the girls side.

And on the boys side were Josh Hampton, Trey Lichtenberg, and Will Derry.

We had meets against Leakey, Junction, Rock Springs, and OLH.

At the District Meet Emily Zirkel battled well against the District Champ from Knippa in Girls Singles, Ashanti Williams, and Josh Hampton advanced to the 2nd round against the Utopia Mixed Doubles pair who eventually won the mixed doubles at district.

Ashlyn Turner and her sister Autumn advanced to the 2nd round in Girls Doubles to play the Knippa Girls Doubles team who eventually won the district title.

In the JV division at district both mixed doubles teams of Hailey Grassie/ Will Derry and Elizabeth Gibbs/Trey Lichtenberg both advanced to the 2nd round in the district tournament. This was my first year as a Tennis Coach and the young men and young women were wonderful to work with and I look forward to again being their coach next year.
