If you saw the Bandera High School sport fields’ lights on and heard a lot of cars honking and people cheering at dusk on Thursday, May 7, you might have thought games were underway.
There were no actual games, but Bulldog spirit was there as spring sports athletes, whose seasons ended early do to COVID-19 pandemic, were recognized for their hard work at special celebrations.
BISD Athletic Director Joel Fontenot-Amedee, other coaches, staff and parents made the event work to show the athletes are winners in the hearts of Bandera supporters.
The sports recognized were softball, baseball, girls soccer, boys soccer, girls track, boys track, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls golf and boys and girls powerlifting.
Each sport was celebrated in ten-minute intervals, which coincided with a video tribute release on a school YouTube channel celebrating each group of seniors, Amedee said.
He encouraged the public to celebrate the seniors at designated times for each of the sports by driving through the stadiums’ parking lots, honking their horns and watching the video releases.
Officials asked everyone at the event to follow all social distancing guidelines by staying in their car, and once the celebration was over, all cars had to leave school grounds.
