Bandera Bulldog Soccer is back, and players have taken the pitch. Both JV and Varsity teams have been practicing since late November and have been eager to take the field.

Two weeks ago, both teams matched up against Uvalde at home; JV lost 0-2 and the Varsity team fell short 2-3, but both teams showed poise under pressure and put together some good soccer.

Then, Varsity team traveled to La Grange for the 1st annual Best Tournament in Texas. The Bulldogs, who are still trying to find their rhythm; where unable to come out with a win vs some playoff contention teams from Region 3.

Both Goalies Sr. Marco Reyes and Sophomore Connor Garrett played well and made some great saves over the weekend. Jr. Cristian Garcia-Carrillo stepped up to be a vocal leader on the field encouraging his younger teammates, while Sr. Captain Alberto “Beto” Muzquiz keepted the pace of the game alive.

Returning Sophomore Ibraham Mac-Neil scored the lone goal of the weekend for Bandera in their 4th game vs Manor New Tech. Sr. Captain Felix Diaz showed great leadership playing in multiple positions throughout the tournament. For his effort, tactical ability and skill on the ball.

Felix was unanimously named to the All-Tournament Team.

Tuesday, Jan. 10, JV competed against a new team from Center Point. After a week off the players showed massive improvement taking the lead 2-1 in the first half with goals by Italian Foreign Exchange student athlete Bruno Rossato. Center Point equalized in the second half but the Bulldogs were able to pull away with a lead after a goal by Freshmen Evan Bowman.

Center Point did not back down and scored another goal and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Standout players for the Bulldogs include Freshman Quinlan King who showed great skill with the ball. Jr. Lane Timmons, Sophomore Aiden White, and Sophomore Michael Verhey lead the defending line preventing multiple goal scoring opportunities for the Center Point Pirates.

Varsity came away with their first win of the season against the Poteet Aggies. After losing 13 seniors from the previous graduating class, the young team has been eager to pick up a win after the first week of games.

Bandera and Poteet were both struggling to find the net in the first half but the Bulldogs’ consistency and Senior poise lead to Felix Diaz scoring his first goal of the season and first of the night. Bandera went into halftime on top 1-0. Bulldogs came out early in the second half scoring in the first minute with a goal by returning Jr. Forward Cristian Garcia, Felix Diaz with the assist. Sr. Beto Muzquiz capitalized on a penalty kick to bring the Bulldogs up 3-0. A break down in the defense led to the Aggies earning their only goal of the night.

Eager to extend the lead, Felix Diaz found the net two more times completing the hat trick. The final goal of the night came off the foot of Sophomore Hayden Swalve who sent a rocket in which the Aggies tried to deflect leading to an own goal. Jr. Hudson Jackson continued to show poise under pressure. Freshman Maverick Short showed strength and kept the pace of the game flowing in the Bulldogs favor.
