The Medina Wordsmiths met on Tuesday, May 25, at the Medina Community Library to edit, give feedback and provide encouragement to local writers.

While the gathering was small, a variety of topics were discussed as each member’s submission was gently critiqued by the members of the group. The varied topics discussed went from sentence structure and plot holes to character development and historical background.

The group carefully went through each submission and gave personalized feedback to each budding author.

The group’s submissions ranged from adult fiction, poetry, and autobiography to science fiction.

All forms of writing are accepted and reviewed by the group. Submissions are emailed in the week before the meeting so members can pre-read and gather their comments.

During the meeting, a round table discussion is held to discuss each submission.

Award-winning, published author Joanne Easley brought her beginning draft to the sequel of her novel, “Sweet Jane.”

Columnist Vicki George presented a submission of an autobiography highlighting her youth in Austin.

Wordsmith Vicki Brower provided some humor to the group as she described her experiences researching.

Absent member Vicki Shroyer, a Medina resident, and Wordsmith has been collecting oral history about the devastating 1978 flood on the North Prong of the Medina River. Shroyer plans to write authentic stories of the flood to be used in the Medina Flag Day Celebration on June 12.

Techniques for marketing books and writing were shared with the group as well as the effectiveness of using book blogs and in-person signing events.

Joanne Easley took part in the Lone Star Festival on Saturday, May 29, where she signed “Sweet Jane” and talked about the craft of writing.

The Medina Wordsmiths meet monthly to provide encouragement and support to aspiring local writers. Their next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 29, at the Medina Community Library. The meeting will start at 3:30 PM. All area writers, novice, and veteran are welcome to participate.

For would-be writers who have always said, “I should write a book about this,” the Medina Wordsmiths is the group that can help make that happen!
