Book sale benefits Medina library

The Medina Community Library had their Big Book Sale at the Rodney Camp Pavilion last week. The sale dominated the pavilion building with books donated by patrons and culled from library collections.

“because our library is so small, we have to clear out older books to make way for the new books coming in,” said Library Director Alison Harbour. The library has three sales each year.

The proceeds from this book sale will fund the Library’s free Summer Reading 2021 program for children and teens. Harbour said the program is intended to engage students, no matter their age, in reading throughout the summer. This year’s theme is ‘Tails and Tales.’

The Summer Reading Program is designed for “littles” and “bigs.”

The program for “littles” is created to share stories, have arts and crafts time and encourage play. The “bigs” program is focused on science-based themes. Arts and crafts will be incorporated into these activities that support the day’s topic.

On July 9, there will be a Bey Blade Academy. Two sessions on Legos, June 28 and July 13, will be offered. To finish the summer on July 28, there will be a kids’ water conservation workshop.

The Library will also host the FRED program. The Families Reading Every Day program, sponsored by the Texas AgriL ife Extension Service, is a free program designed to strengthen family bonds and improve literacy by encouraging families to focus specifically on time spent reading together as a family.

During the four-week daily program, the family enters the number of books read, and the time spent reading together. The goal is to read together 15 minutes a day for the first two weeks and then increase the time to 30 minutes a day for the last two weeks.

Reading logs will be due to the Library on July 31. Prizes and a party to end the summer program will follow shortly thereafter.

Sign up for the Medina Community Library Summer Reading 2021 began on May 24. The first session will be on Thursday, June 23 with Insects and Rock Painting for the bigs. The littles will learn that “Elephants Have Tails.”

“Legos for Kids and Families” will be presented on Monday, June 28.

All summer reading programs are free.
