Volunteer program spreads Christmas joy

Christmas came a little early for 200-plus children and more than 70 low-income families in Bandera County on Saturday, Dec. 14. That’s when the special Christmas outreach called the Spirits of Christmas Presents sent out volunteers dressed in Santa costumes and others dressed as Christmas elves to deliver presents to youngsters who otherwise may not have gotten presents during the holiday. It marked the 40th year that the volunteer initiative has been held in Bandera. Karen Jackson and Kathy Gardner started the event using volunteers from Gardner’s Brownie troop to get gently used toys wrapped and delivered to about 20 families. Forty years later,
