The Museum of Western Art recently announced student workshops led by landscape painting artists to be held between now and July.

Three workshops tie in with the museum's upcoming exhibit, "The Heavens Declare: Celebrating the Glory of the Skies," which will open on April 1 and run until July 9. Interested artists of all levels of painting experience may participate in each 3-day workshop. Space is limited, painting supplies are not included, and reservations are required. Each workshop includes free admission to the museum and a guided tour by the Museum Director.

March 8-10’s “Western Landscapes and Nocturnes” will be led by C.S. “Steve” Talley, whose style of impressionistic realism and his talents as an exceptional western landscape painter has brought him recognition throughout the country. This workshop on oil and acrylic will center on the landscape of the western U.S. Each day will begin with a one-hour demonstration in oil pertinent to the day's lessons. Individual assistance to all students will be available throughout the day. Students are asked to bring their photo references of Western mountains and Southwest architecture. Cost: $350.00

April 5-7’s “The Beauty of the Skyscape” will be led by Linda Glover Gooch, whose work has been featured in several national magazines and she teaches workshops all across the country. Students will study various clouds and skies, noting how billowing clouds come in countless shapes, sizes and various colors. Participants will work with photographs with low horizons, focusing on how to handle different skies, including sunsets and stormy scenes. Students are encouraged to bring their own photographs to work from. Cost: $450.00

May 4-6’s “Painting Skies in Pastel” workshop from Denise LaRue Mahlke, whose paintings evoke a sense of peace that “intimately connects the viewer with place.” This workshop is open to all levels and will cover principles that will help the student better understand and effectively paint the beauty of the skies with a believable atmosphere, proper perspective and various interesting moods from dawn to dusk, focusing on clouds. Students are encouraged to bring their own photographs. Cost: $450.00

Junge 16-18’s "Compositionally Speaking" by John Taft will be an instructional lecture on day one, followed by two days of painting the principles on location, a supplemental lecture, and group and individual critique/feedback of student paintings. Open to all levels. Cost: $450.00
