Medina author releases second book
Joanne Kukanza Easley’s’ second book, “Just One Look,” officially releases June 24, and the Medina-based author isn’t slowing down.
Easley says she’s currently working on her third book and has plans for a fourth and fifth.
Her latest book follows a girl named Dani from 1965 into the 70s in a tale of sorrow, vengeance, denial and, ultimately, resolution.
Easley is so stranger to dark material, as readers of her multi-award-winning debut, “Sweet Jane,” will recall.
“I write fiction about complicated 20th century women who eventually figure it out,” said Easley. “You could say that’s my motto.”
Dani, the protagonist of her latest work, fits in perfectly with that motto.
At the age of thirteen, Dani is convinced she is going to spend the rest of her life with John. But when John is killed in action, Dani sets out to ensure everyone else is just as heartbroken as her.
“People have setbacks, struggles and problems, and they can come out the other side,” responded Easley when asked what she hopes readers will take from “Just One Look.”
It’s dark material, yes, but Easley insists it is true and honest.
“Life mixes tragedy and the absurd. Sometimes if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry,” she said. “I don’t mute myself at the expense of truth or character.
Easley said she develops a deep attachment to her characters, even dreaming about them.
“They are very real to me. I imagine what they do, and sometimes I’m surprised and shocked by their actions,” she said.
Easley said inspiration for her books often arrives during physical activities like swimming or walking her dogs. She can’t immediately stop and take notes, but she does so as soon as she can.
Easley, a retired nurse who always had a passion for writing but had to put it on hold when life had other plans, says she’s completely in her element now that she has time to focus on her craft, and she encourages other authors to pursue their dream.
“Do it now. Don’t wait.”
