Food distribution set for June 24

The next county wide food distribution, sponsored by the Silver Sage center and the San Antonio Food Bank, will be held on Wednesday, June 24, at just one site, Mansfield Park north of Bandera.

Mansfield Park is located at 2886 Highway 16 North. The food will be available for distribution from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Clients who participated in the last food give away, held at four sites around the county, are preregistered for the distribution next week. Those who have not registered should call the Silver Sage at 830-796-4969 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily and ask for Art Crawford or Karyn Utterback.

Anyone wanting to volunteer to help with the distribution also can call the Silver Sage to sign up.

Preregistering allows the Silver Sage to plan for the number of participants served at the event.

Those registering must qualify under at least one of the conditions established to govern who is eligible to receive the assistance, although no documentation will be required to prove that qualification.

Any family that has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will qualify as will anyone receiving assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, the Supplemental Security Income program, the federal Free and Reduced Price Lunch program and Medicaid. Also, if your household income is 185% of the federal 2019 poverty guidelines, you qualify for the food.

If registered but unable to pick up your food boxes, contact the Silver Sage and a volunteer will pick up the boxes and take it to the center at 803 Buck Creek Dr. in Bandera until it can be picked up.

Although an exact list of food items available at the giveaway was not available last week, food boxes handed out at prior distributions contained canned goods, eggs, milk, frozen chicken, meat, fruit and vegetables.

Several Bandera County businesses and organizations support the event, including the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic, the Bandera Business Association, Bandera County Commissioners’ Court, Bandera County Democratic Club, Bandera County Sheriff’s Department, Bandera Lions Club, Bandera County Republican Women, Bandera Wranglers and Lowe’s Market.

Another food distribution has been scheduled for July 29.
