Editor’s Note: The following is an election announcement from a local candidate. Candidates are allowed an announcement free of charge, with all following materials charged an ad fee.

Growing up in a military family, we often moved. Although I appreciated the ability to see the country, to meet new people, and to experience cultures and traditions, I knew never to get too attached to temporary addresses. Fortunately, that mindset changed when I started calling Bandera my permanent home.

I attended Sam Houston State University on a golf scholarship and graduated with a business degree. Active in athletics and extracurricular activities, I met my husband Brett Hicks, quarterback of the university’s team. Once we were married, Brett and I moved to his hometown of Bandera, and we started our family. Brett enchanted me with Bandera, describing how special it was growing up in a small town. I feel blessed that now my three children, Harper, Lila, and Rand Michael can also experience these same smalltown luxuries.

After college, I utilized my business degree, primarily in a sales capacity for technology firms. However, an intense inner call to teach, a desire to shape the future and to make our schools a better place, persuaded me to switch careers and to earn my secondary teaching certificate. I have worked as an English and speech communication teacher, learning the complex inner workings of a school district. This experience inspired me to embrace leadership in the school district, and in 2013, I ran for BISD school board trustee. For the past 12 years, I have resided in Bandera County and dedicated myself to service for this community. I negotiate contract services for Warriors Heart and the Mayan Dude Ranch, as well as serve as the current BISD school board president. Serving on the school board allows me opportunities to serve in community relations, policy change, and financial planning. My heart lies in volunteering, and I actively volunteer for the BISD Education Foundation, Bandera Little League, Bandera Foster Closet, and St. Stanislaus Catechism.

I am committed to building a sustainable Bandera County. My energy, tenacity, and dedication will represent the members of the CO-OP and provide an innovative voice and direction as a board director. I look forward to supporting BEC collaborative relations with the community.
