LUITGARD CORNELISON

LUITGARD CORNELISON

Lui Cornelison was born Luitgard Margarethe Stenglein on May 29, 1939 to Konrad und Maria Stenglein in the small village of Sachsendorf-Neuhaus in the verdant forested hill country of Frankonia In the state of Bavaria, Germany. The only girl among four brothers, she attended secondary school at the Convent of Vierzehnheiligen outside Lichtenfels, Germany.

Settling in the nearby city of Bamberg after her schooling, she promptly met U.S. Army Private William Cornelison at the newly- formed International Club there. Following a six-month courtship, the pair were first married in civil union at the Bamberg Courthouse on December 24, 1957, and then held their church wedding on Jan 2, 1958 at the Bamberg Warner U.S. Army Barracks Post Chapel. (Two weddings for a super-secure bond!)

After six months of marriage, the young couple moved to Texas to stay, living in Tarpley, Kerrville, Dallas, Denton, Houston, and finally (back to) Bandera, TX. Lui, as most friends knew her, (also as Oma and Ur-Oma), had two sons (Charles and Thomas) and one daughter (Heidemarie);, three granddaughters (Kerstin, Ursula and Kristin), two grandsons (Leonhard and Robert), and two great-grandchildren (Rosie and Benedict), all of whom she loved wholeheartedly.

Lui enjoyed a lifelong love of babies. She cared for countless children throughout her life, both at her home and in childcare centers. She did countless special and thoughtful things for the children in her care, as well as for their families.. Lui was an inspired cook, spending many hours in her kitchen creating miraculous delectables out of very simple ingredients. She helped deliver meals with her long-time friend Marianne Sandidge for Silver Sage’s Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of the Bandera Breast Cancer Support Group.

Lui enjoyed sewing and gardening and was a member of Bandera’s Native Plant Society. She acted in numerous productions with the Bandera Riverside Players and also enjoyed music, attending countless concerts with her beloved husband of 68 years (136 anniversaries!), Bill.

Lui was a dedicated, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as a wonderful friend to many throughout her life.
