Bandera Library Happenings

February has arrived and it is a busy and fun month here at the Library. Come check out the Library’s special displays this month.

On our featured wall we will be celebrating Black History Month with a highlight of the books and movies that tell the stories of the very many contributions Black Americans have had on history, science, music, movies and culture.

We will also be celebrating Valentine’s Day here at the Library with a special display of books you can take on a “blind date.” Each book will be wrapped and have a small blurb about it. You won’t know what book you have checked out until you unwrap it!

Today we are hosting one of our last installments of the Medicare 101 class at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. You can learn about what Medicare does and does not cover and how to maximize your benefits. It is a great resource if you are already on Medicare or about to age in. Call the library to get information on how to register. The class will be held in the Downstairs Meeting Room and class size is limited so that all your questions can be answered.

Tomorrow, February 3, at 10 a.m. is our Monthly Book Club meeting in the Genealogy Room. The group will be discussing “Hamnet” by Maggie O’Farrell.

O’Farrell tells the story behind William Shakespeare’s most elusive play, “Hamlet.” It is set in Warwickshire in the 1580s where a young and beautiful bride has settled in the community with her husband and their three children. The twins, Hamnet and Judith are only eleven years old when tragically Hamnet dies. Four short years later, his father writes “Hamlet”.

Saturday, February 5, is our Monthly Book Fair hosted by the Friends of the Library. Be sure to stop by from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to pick up some new or gently used books all available by donation. The proceeds of the book fair go to purchasing new titles for the library. We would like to express our deep gratitude to the Friends for their continued support of the library.

On Saturday, we will also be hosting a follow-up workshop with Tina Melo and the Melo Project Runway. Tina is a retired fashion designer who has developed a Montessori-based sewing workshop for children aged 5 and up. Kids will learn the basics of sewing using a machine and some history of fashion. Registration is highly recommended. Call the library to get your kids signed up.

The Bandera Public Library is located at 515 Main Street. Our hours are Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Masks are strongly recommended while in the building and curbside service is available for checkouts and business services.

Happy tales, y’all.
