Active COVID-19 case count record broken five times in one week
The active COVID-19 case count for Bandera has steadily climbed since January 5, standing at 207 active cases as of Monday afternoon, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
DSHS reported January 9’s active count at 193, January 8’s at 189, January 7 at 170, and January 6’s and 5’s at 144.
Until last week, the all-time high case count for Bandera County was 137, set in September 2021.
DSHS also attributed a new death in the county to COVID-19, bringing the total fatality count to 65.
The vaccination rate for Bandera increased slightly last week, with 51.02 percent of those aged five and up having received at least one dose. That’s up from the previous number of 50.82 percent.
In that same age demographic, 44.45 percent are fully vaccinated.
Both of these percentages remain the lowest out of all the counties bordering Bandera, a statistic that Vaccinate Bandera is still working to change.
Vaccinate Bandera, funded by statewide grants from DSHS in partnership with the Texas A&M University Health Science Center, was present at the Lakehills Civic Center during the monthly food distribution put on by the Silver Sage and San Antonio Food Bank.
“We gave out eight primary series shots and 36 booster shots today,” said Levin Crawford, Project Manager for Vaccinate Bandera, following Monday’s event.
Vaccinate Bandera will be present at this weekend’s Junior Livestock Show and January 26’s food distribution event at Mansfield Park.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services announced yesterday hospitalizations in the United States had surpassed January’s 2021 peak levels.
Locally, Peterson Health reports 21 people are hospitalized, seven of which are in the ICU as of Monday.
Statewide, hospitalizations were up 77 percent, with 413,994 new cases of COVID-19 reported by the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University.
