The Bulldogs matched Devine big play for big play through the first half and deep into the third quarter Friday night at Warhorse Stadium, but the Warhorses eventually were able to take advantage of a few crucial mistakes to pull away in the fourth for a 44- 22 victory.

“We played a good half of football, but it takes four quarters to beat a good team like Devine,” Bandera head coach and athletic director Joel Fon-tenot-Amedee said. “We have a 24 hour rule. Win or lose we move on to the next opponent after 24 hours.”

Despite going into halftime 22-22, turnovers and untimely mistakes on special teams and defense ended up costing the Bulldogs in the final two quarters, as Devine continued to eat up the clock and move the ball down the field efficiently with its run-dominant offensive scheme.

Quarterback Tyler Moore finished with 177 total yards and two touchdowns while Johnson added 80 total yards and two scores to pace the Bandera offense. Senior Brandon Miller was the team’s leading receiver Friday night with four catches for 42 yards.

Defensively, senior Matthew Staton had 17 tackles and one tackle for loss. David Guerra had 12 tackles, Kevin Rodriguez had 11 tackles, and Jesse Cardenas had eight tackles and one TFL.

The Bulldogs fell to 5-3 and 1-2 in district play with the loss. Bandera will return to action next Friday night on the road against Hondo, when the Bulldogs and Owls will battle for control of third place in District 15-4A Division II. Hondo (3-4, 2-1 district) is coming off a narrow 20-14 win over Crystal City.

The varsity team will travel to Hondo at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.

“We will be fired up to go to play a traditional rival, Hondo, for the third straight year,” Amedee said. “We need our Bulldog fans to show up and show out once again next week. Thanks for your support!”
