Power Dawgs place at powerlifting meet

The Power Dawgs competed at the Cornerstone High School Powerlifting Meet where the BHS boys squad won first place with some outstanding lifts and the BHS girls squad came in third.

Sixty-nine powerlifters competed in this meet from the San Antonio area. The field included lifters from East Central ISD, Banco ISD, Veterans Memorial High School in Judson ISD, Poteet ISD, Poth ISD and Cornerstone High School.

The boys’ squad members had excellent weight totals at the meet. Ethan Brown came in first place in the 132 lb. weight class with lifts of 695 lbs. He was named the Best Lightweight Lifter of the Meet.

Joey Flewellen came in fourth in the 132 lbs. weight class with lifts totaling 745 lbs.

In the 165-pound weight class, Danny Freeman came in second with lifts totaling 1,010 lbs. and Mathew Chavez came in third with lifts totaling 990 lbs.

In the 181-pound weight class, Mathew Staton came in second with lifts totaling 1,215 lbs. and George Cabasos came in seventh with lifts totaling 885 lbs.

In the 220-pound weight class, Kaloeb Son came in second with lifts totaling 1,340 pounds.

In the 242-pound weight class, Ethan Boyd came in second with lifts of 1,150 pounds.

Noah Sizemore came in second in the 308-pound weight class with lifts of 1,385 pounds.

The boys squad competed in their last qualifying meet of the year on February 23 at Texas Strength Systems in San Antonio. Results were not available at press time.

On the girls’ side, Emily Garcia came in first in her weight class with a lift total of 695 pounds.

Ashley Grodman came in second in her weight class with a lift total of 690 pounds. She was also named Best Lightweight Lifter of the Meet.

Ryann Ledesma came in second in her weight class with a lift total of 510 pounds.

Tams Flewellen came in fourth in her weight class with a lift total of 620 pounds.

Dorothy Magee came in second in her weight class with a lift total of 690 pounds.

The Cornerstone High School meet was the girls’ last qualifying meet of the year before Regionals in Edinburg on March 1 at the Bert Ogden Arena. The BHS girls squad qualifiers for the Regional Meet are Emily Garcia, Ashley Grodman, Hazel Lopez, Kamryn Golightly, and Dorothy Magee.
