Gladys Breiten Teer Kollman was born in Quihi, TX on January 20, 1923 and entered eternal rest on April 16, 2023 at her home in Hondo, TX. She was the only child of Oscar Breiten Sr. and Ida Lindeburg and was the third generation born in the United States. Her family immigrated with Castro in the 1800s and helped settled the area that is now known as Quihi, TX. Gladys told many stories about her Great Grandparents journey from Germany with Castro and made certain the later generations understood the hardships they went through.

Growing up, Gladys spent her time between Quihi, Hondo, Tarpley, and Bandera. She shared her memories about her life growing up and was always the family historian. In June of 1941 she met Brooks Teer and after a brief courtship, they married at the Bandera Courthouse on June 16, 1941. Together, they had 4 children and in 1964 Brooks passed away from cancer. After Brooks’ passing, Gladys spent her time with her children and grandchildren. In 1975, she married Emmitt Kollman and they were married until his passing in 1978.

The historical events Gladys experienced and the stories she would tell are astounding. She often spoke of surviving the Great Depression, her experiences during WWII, her husband’s time in service, and her most recent experience of beating Covid in 2020. In her spare time, Gladys enjoyed dancing, bowling, crocheting, cooking, watching sports and gardening. She had a green thumb that made many envious and loved sharing her tips and tricks with anyone who asked.

Gladys was known as “Grandma” to many family friends and will be missed by all. She is preceded in death by her parents; spouses; half-brother, Oscar Jr.; half-sister, Mary Evelyn; daughter, Carol Teer Martinez; and son-in-law, Bruce Alanis. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Bobby Teer and his wife Sharon; her daughter Anita Jeffery and her husband Phil; and her daughter Dorothy Alanis. Her legacy includes her 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren, all who affectionately call her “GG”. Her numerous nephews and nieces will also miss her dearly. The Teer family is planning a memorial service in Bandera on April 29. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Scottish Rite Hospital or the American Cancer Association.
