Last week, the Class of 2022 came together with their parents and over 40 community organizations to recognize scholarship and award winners for seniors. The total amount of scholarships given was $564,650, topping last year’s total by almost $200,000.

BISD district administrator Stephanie Jones, standing in for Ben Hevenor, presented Chelsey Graves with a scholarship from the Bandera County Aggie Club.

Raelynn Butler was awarded the Telvy Robbins Memorial Scholarship along with the Barbara Mazurek Memorial Scholarship by Kevin Meier, Chairman of the Bandera County Junior Livestock Show Association.

Raelynn Butler and Reese Mazurek received Thomas H. “Bub” Keese Memorial Scholarships also presented by Meier.

Kathy Lindig Hunt presented the Werner Max Lindig Memorial Scholarship to Raelynn Butler. Hunt’s father, Werner Max Lindig, was Bandera County Extension Agent for 27 years.

The Bandera Brewery Scholarship was presented to Sophie Phillips by Johnny Oliver and Elisabeth Cox.

Robert Aguirre, BEC District 1 Director, presented scholarships to Reese Mazurek, Hannah Edwards, and Kylee Henderson from the electric coop.

The John G. Slocumb Optimist Club of Bandera scholarships were presented to Kaloeb Son and Amberly Patterson by club president, Sully Woodland.

Kara Spangler, Youth 4H Program Educator, and Dakota Kempken, Bandera County Extension Agent, presented Bandera 4H Scholarships to Kylee Henderson, Reese Mazurek, and Rien Mazurek.

The Richard A. Gnade Foundation Trust Fund, represented by Father Rob Harris, presented scholarships to Mathew Staton, Duggan Persyn, Logan Sadler, and Cade Koenig.

Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority, represented by BHS English teacher Brenda Huvar, presented the Katie Kidd Memorial Scholarship to Amberly Patterson.

Verna Riopel, representing the Kiwanis Club of Bandera County, presented a scholarship to Emily Abbott.

Academic Decathlon coaches Joe Cortez and Dan Zavorka recognized their senior team members and listed the scholarship money won during their participation in the Acadec program. Seniors receiving scholarship money are Sidney Timmons, Chris Palleson, and Chandler Knowles.

The Lakehills American Legion Post 410 Family awarded ten scholarships to BHS seniors. Nancy Webb presented scholarships to Stella Brown, Katie Dibrell, Chelsey Graves, Cade Koenig, Sophie Phillips, Logan Sadler, Halie Barta, Hannah Edwards, James Ross Reynolds, and Duggan Persyn.

Bandera Masonic Lodge Worshipful Master Ray Hemel and Tiler Robert Webb presented a scholarship from the Lodge to Cobe Martin.

Robert Webb presented a new scholarship from the HCP Memorial for Advancement of Technology and Trade to senior Evan Callaway.

The Bob Shearhart Booster Club Scholarship was presented to Maci Morrison, David Guerra, Reese Mazurek, Kyle Morgan, and Ryan Perez by Shawn Burns Morrison.

Brittany Timmons presented the BHS Cheer Scholarship to Sidney Timmons and Paige Rayle.

Rien and Reese Mazurek were presented with scholarships from the Bandera Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 643 by Patricia Miller.

Linda Hunter, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the Bandera County Retired Teachers Chapter, presented Amberly Patterson with a scholarship from the group.

Wade Mayfield of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition presented one scholarship to Stella Brown, and two scholarships to Quinnlyn Taylor from the group.

The Bandera County Republican Women’s Club presented a scholarship to Rien Mazurek. Club Secretary and Scholarship Chair Janeen Irrgang and Campaign Chairperson Brandi Conover presented the award.

Dale Naumann, representing the Texas Angora Goat Raisers’ Association, awarded scholarships to Stella Brown, Quinnlyn Taylor, and Maci Morrison.

Chris Stevenson, Educational Partnerships Coordinator for Schreiner University, presented over $300,000 in tuition scholarships to three BHS seniors. They were Amanda Perrin, Lauren Benedict, and Kaloeb Son.

Theresa Schultz, representing the Bandera American Legion Post 157, presented a scholarship to Logan Sadler.

ATPE member Karen Pierce presented the Patsy Small-Mark Warren Scholarship to Sophie Phillips and Quinnlyn Taylor.

Paul Adams presented the Cody Blain Adams Memorial Scholarship to BHS senior Emily Abbott in memory of his son who was killed by a drunk driver.

Rob Swalve, Student Ministry Director of the Bandera United Methodist Church, presented scholarships from the church to Hannah Edwards, Maci Morrison, Amberly Patterson, Kyle Morgan, and Justin Beal.

Kyle Morgan and Justin Beal received honor cords recognizing their status as Eagle Scouts from Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 146 Eric Morgan at the Scholarship and Awards Ceremony on May 17.

Hill Country Television and Internet Company awarded a scholarship to Maci Morrison.

Logan Sadler received scholarships from the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country and the American Legion Auxiliary from Post 157 in Bandera.

The Bandera County Farm Bureau awarded a scholarship to Kylee Henderson.

Amberly Patterson was awarded the Tiffany S. Durand scholarship.

The UIL Top Ten Percent was awarded to sixteen seniors. They are Hannah Edwards, Chelsey Graves, Raelynn Butler, Mackenzie Hanks, Justin Beal, Duggan Persyn, Cade Koenig, Mathew Staton, Logan Sadler, Maci Morrison, Sophie Phillips, Kate Guajardo, Emily Garcia, Lindsey Bostain, Sidney Timmons, and Jesus Rodriguez.

Counselor Debra Martinez presented Quinnlyn Taylor with the Hill Country District Livestock Angora Goat Premier Exhibitor Award.

Mackenzie Hanks and Halie Barta were awarded Margaret Alkek Endowed Scholarships.

Career and Technology Scholarships from the Gorder Family were awarded to Chelsey Graves, Sophie Phillips, Sidney Timmons, Logan Sadler, and Hannah Edwards.

The United States Marine Corps honored Luke Barnett and Emily Garcia with Distinguished Athletes awards. They also presented awards to Kaloeb Son and Kyle Morgan.

Joe E. Langford Scholarships were presented to Mathew Staton, Jesus Rodriguez, Chelsey Graves, Sidney Timmons, Hannah Edwards, Duggan Persyn, Sophie Phillips, and Kaloeb Son.

Doane Memorial Scholarships were presented to Jesus Rodriguez, Maci Morrison, Kaloeb Son, Amberly Patterson, Hannah Edwards, Sidney Timmons, Stella Brown, Duggan Persyn, Chelsey Graves, and Cade Koenig.

Valedictorian Cade Koenig and Salutatorian Duggan Persyn were presented with medals to mark their academic honors and introduced to the audience by BHS principal Dr. Kenneth Vogel.

Honor graduates were awarded their cords to wear at graduation. Gold signified Magna Cum Laude status. Red signified Summa Cum Laude status, and white signified Cum Laude status.

To end the evening, the prestigious Will to Win Award was presented to Wilbur Zepeda Diaz by Coach Wes Miller and Principal Dr. Kenneth Vogel. Mr. Diaz immigrated to the United States from El Salvador as a seventh grader. He knew no English, but quickly learned to put his talents to good use. Diaz played for three years on the BHS soccer team. As a soccer team assistant, Diaz assists Coach Miller with translation to other players, practices with the team while coaching the younger players.

Miller states, “Wilber is friendly with everyone he meets and had shown a tremendous amount of growth as an individual in his time within BISD.”
