Family members of Master Sergeant Rodney Lee Buentello hold the sign commemorating him during a ceremony last Wednesday at Bandera City Park. Buentello, a retired Marine and two-time purple heart recipient, drowned after rescuing two teenagers from the Medina River.

The event was attended by local county and state officials, including Representative Andrew Murr, who authored a bipartisan bill with Ina Minjarez and Senator Dawn Buckingham to designate seven miles of Highway 173 as Master Sergeant Rodney Lee Buentello Memorial Highway.

“This give us all an opportunity to recognize Master Sergeant Buentello’s heroism, which should be recognized for all eternity here in Bandera,” said Bandera County Attorney Janna Lindig, President of the Bandera Pro Rodeo Association, who spearheaded the movement.
