THE FIRST AMENDMENT HAS LIMITS

I finally forced myself to read a tediously long column and an incredibly long letter in the last edition of the Bandera Bulletin. Both were notable for their lack of sources and facts.

One was informed readers about a new website and thanked “patriots” for their help in fending off intrusive government. What is more intrusive than rules governing other’s health care, banning masks in schools or restricting the right to vote? The intrusions list is much longer.

The other was an incredibly long series of statements accusing the “Left” (yes, the writer capitalized that word) of all sorts of bad behavior - lying and even crimes, while it promotes the idea that rioters at the Capitol were not armed. It cites no sources or facts to support its claims.

While the First Amendment guarantees the right to free speech, it has limits. You can’t yell “fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire.
