DRT chapter meets, awards community

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas Caddel-Smith Chapter held their March 5 meeting at the El Progreso Memorial Library in Uvalde.

The day was filled with awards, a nomination for Teacher of the Year and the welcoming of two brothers into the John Blanton Children of the Republic of Texas chapter.

The two winners of the Texas History Contest were presented with certificates and cash prizes. The fourth graders wrote about Jose Antonio Navarro, and the seventh grade was assigned Sam Houston.

The winners in fourth grade were: First Place Colt Ayala, St Philip’s Episcopal School; Second Place Kale Adair, St. Philip’s Episcopal School; and Third Place Charles Keith, Nueces Canyon ISD.

The winning essays for seventh grade were: First Place Celia Navarro, Leakey ISD; Second Place Sierra Nickel, Classic Academy Uvalde ISD; and Third Place Macee Rhodes Utopia ISD. The chapter also nominated Sharla Nickel of St. Philip’s Episcopal School, for the Outstanding Fourth Grade Teacher of the Year, Texas History Contest. T

After presentations, recognitions, and the new member induction, refreshments were enjoyed and the regular March business meeting followed.

The chapter’s Memorial Meeting and Brunch will be April 14, 2022, at the home of Kay Anderson in Leakey. The chapter says they are looking forward to the 131st Annual State Convention in Austin, slated for May 26-28.
