The Boys & Girls Club of Bandera County (BGC) held their 2022 Youth of the Year Award Banquet earlier this month at the Silver Sage Senior Center, where select BGC youth were treated with gift bags, a steak dinner and monetary grants for college.

“The Youth of the Year Award is a signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders fully prepared to live and lead in life,” said Executive Director, Amy Ouellette. In a 21st century world and workplace, there are skills such as communication, goal-setting, and teamwork that are essential for everyone, especially young people preparing to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood.”

Seven youth were honored for their excellence in leadership and persistence. Each took a turn at the podium to share what BGC has meant to them, their stories, their interests and passions, and their gratitude.

Jackie Thorp, Director of the Alkek unit, presented her youth of the year, Brylee.

“She’s an amazing young lady. She does exceedingly well at school and she is a marvel in the club,” said Thorp.

Brylee, who was put in charge of running the talent show, said: “BGC has helped me become a better leader. I had to get all the groups to practice and present them at the talent show. The BGC has taught me to be kind, trustworthy, and loyal. Miss Jackie has taught me to never give up and showed me how to come out of my shell.”

Garl Thorp, Director of the Hill Country unit introduced his youth of the year, Autumn.

“A lot of times, I never have to ask her to do things,” he said. “She watches what’s going on and walks over and helps others, helps the staff.

Autumn explained that BGC took up for her when she was being bullied in school.

Jimmy Sarabia, Unit Director for the BGC Teen Center, had five youth to present and praise.

“Youth of the Year is based on their experience at the club. I’m proud of every single one of them for being able to get up here and stand before you with their stories,” he said.

Each youth gave a speech, crafted from the heart.

First up was Charles, who expressed his appreciation for all the activities that the Teen Center offered, along with the kindness and understanding that he received from the leaders.

Then, Bethanie, who Sarabia describes as always ready to accomplish something and take charge, spoke emotionally about the club, elaborating on how the BGC helped her get through some difficult times and knowing that she was always safe there.

Next was Madison, who shared she learned to express herself and communicate better because of BGC.

Then, Haley told the crowd BGC helped her gain confidence and build friendships she otherwise would not have had without the club.

“I’ve learned how to socialize and fix problems that have arisen,” she said.

Lastly, Jordyn spoke about the activities and programs she has been involved with, all of which have taught her skills.

“I know that when I’m at the club, I have someone to talk to,” she said, explaining Mr. Jimmy and Mr. Joseph devoted a lot of time in helping her hone her basketball skills and that it made her feel good. “There are quiet spots to do my homework and they help me set goals.”

Sarabia said it is always amazing to see the kids get out of their comfort zone and grow.

After the youth speeches, BGC awarded $500 to Haley and $1,000 to Jordyn towards their college funds.

The event concluded with a surprise check of $5000 presented to the BGC from the Bandera Wranglers.
