Bandera Library Happenings

Tomorrow, November 4, from 10 a.m. to noon is the library’s first program in our series teaching computer coding to children aged six and up. Our new partner, SmartCode Coding Academy, will be teaching the kids how to program beetles, and then they will race them! There are a few spots left so be sure to contact the library to register.

Thursday is also when the Library’s Monthly Book Club will be meeting in the Genealogy Room at 10 a.m. The group will be discussing “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” by Kim Michele Richardson.

The book is set in 1936, deep in the woods of eastern Kentucky, where 19-year-old Cussy Carter lives. She is the last living female of the remarkably rare Blue People. Like many of her relatives, Cussy was born with a genetic mutation that gives her skin a distinctive blue tone.

Carter joins the historical Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky known for the mounted librarians who scaled mountains and creek beds on their mules. These real-life women hauled sacks of books and other reading materials and established one of our country’s first mobile libraries.

Cussy befriends the hardscrabble and often suspicious mountain folk of Appalachia. She is determined to bring them some comfort and joy, help people become literate and above all give those with nothing some thing to look forward to.

November’s Self-Care kits are ready to be picked up. Each takehome kit is filled with easy, inexpensive ways to help you relax and stay grounded during this busy holiday season. This month’s kit includes yoga instructions, a calming craft, Epsom salts and herbal tea. Take a little time to breathe and relax. Supplies are limited so stop by today!

The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Masks are recommended while in the library building. Check out our website www.banderacountylibrary.org for all up-to-date information.

Happy tales, y’all.
