Football season kicks off

Poteet traveled to Bulldog Stadium Friday to challenge a young Bandera team in the first game of the 2022-23 season and won 38-13.

Not all was lost in Bandera County, however. Just up the road in Medina, the Bulldogs kicked off their season with a definitive victory. Head to page ten for that full story.

The Bulldogs’ coach says he expects his team to bounce back from their opening loss.

“A lot of mistakes were made but right now we are a team trying to play varsity football. Our kids are going to come back and the thing about is these love each other and work and so we will be fine in the long run and we just have a way and a place we want to be,” said Head Football Coach Joel Fontenot-Amedee.

The Aggies scored first on a 42-yard touchdown pass at 7:13 in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs came back at6:15 of the second quarter with a missile like 54-yard touchdown pass from senior Riley Haley to junior Alex Dirck for a short 7-7 tie.

Poteet took the lead again and for good at 4:30 of the second quarter on a 29-yard touchdown The Aggies took a 14-7 lead into half time after connecting on a 29-yard touchdown pass. After half time Bandera got its last and exciting score. Solomon Alexander scored the team’s second touchdown with of game on a 16-yard catch from Riley Haley at 10:33 of the fourth quarter. Alexander shined in all three phases of the game for the Bulldogs while making his varsity debut and finished with five catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. Alexander also had 7 tackles and two interceptions while averaging 17.2 yards per kickoff return.

Other standouts for the Bulldogs included junior Jesse Cardenas, who rarely came off the field. Cardenas paced the Bandera offense with 133 yards on 19 carries and had five tackles and a pass break up defensively. Haley threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and Dirck finished with one catch for 54 yards and a score. Junior Carson Powers and senior Isaac Martinez each had a sack defensively while senior Eric Straeter had 10 tackles, sophomore Josh Goff and junior Dylan Gherman had nine tackles apiece, and junior Daniel Freeman finished with eight tackles.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-1 on the season with the loss but will look to bounce back and even their record while traveling to Cotulla Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
