For the first time, Bandera will be joining the National Association of Counties for Operation Green Light, an event honoring veteran appreciation from Nov. 4-11.
Mayor Pro Tem Deanna Mc-Cabe read the press release from Bandera Veteran Service Officer Michael Lauricella at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
“They want Bandera to light up their homes and businesses with green lights,” McCabe said. “So, your porch light, go and change them with green bulbs.”
McCabe clarified that the purchase of the green bulb wasn’t necessary.
“Not asking you to buy them, they are getting them donated,” McCabe said. “The green lights would be on all day from November 4 through November 11 to let veterans know they are seen, appreciated, and supported.”
According to McCabe, Lauricella is volunteering to assist the installation of the green bulbs for the community.
“He said he will be more than happy to come out and help anyone change them out,” McCabe said. “He said he’s already talked to all the businesses on Main.”
But Lauricella wants the community to know that Operation Green Light isn’t just for businesses.
“It’s also for all the residents of Bandera County to represent by installing a single green light on their porch or yard if they choose to,” Lauricella said. Lauricella also discussed the symbolism of the Green Light.
“The green light symbolizes a Beacon of Solidarity,” Lauricella said. “It serves as a visual reminder to veterans that they are not alone and that their local community has their backs and stands with them.”
Lauricella hopes that participation in the event will become a tradition.
“As long as I’m in office as the Veteran Service Officer, it will be a tradition,” Lauricella said. “I believe this is the first time everyone collectively has come together and wants this to take place.”
