Texas Farm Bureau scholarship available for ag education majors

College students majoring in agricultural education and preparing to student teach off campus in the spring semester can apply for scholarships from Texas Farm Bureau.

The Mia Balko Student Teaching Award Scholarship is valued at $6,000 and awarded to four senior agricultural education students during the spring semester of off-campus student teaching.

“Student teaching is an invaluable experience. During that semester, those pre-service teachers are able to be in the classroom full time and can learn from experienced agricultural science teachers,” Booker Young, Bandera County Farm Bureau president, said. “This scholarship aims to help lift some of the financial burden as they prepare for careers in agricultural education.”

There are currently about 2,000 full-time agricultural science teachers in Texas and about 1,100 active FFA chapters.

“Agricultural science teachers are in demand,” Booker said. “They play an important role in the classroom and community, and this scholarship will help students prepare to fill those extremely important roles.”

Scholarship applications must be submitted before midnight on Oct. 30.

The college senior must be part of a TFB member-family to qualify and that membership must be maintained for the duration of the scholarship.

Scholarship winners will be announced in mid-December.

The application, eligibility requirements, scholarship checklist and the recommendation form are available online at texasfarmbureau.org/ scholarships.
