U.S. congressional candidate Mark Teixeira and Texas state Rep. Wes Virdell will appear in Bandera Thursday, Sept. 24, for an event focused on the upcoming election for Texas’ 21st Congressional District.
The event is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Wayback, aka the former Longhorn, 1307 Main St. in Bandera.
Organizers told the Bulletin the event is not a fundraiser or a traditional political rally, but rather an informal, town hall-style opportunity for residents to meet the candidates, ask questions and hear from them ahead of the November election. Promotional materials describe the event as a “get out the vote rally.”
Teixeira, a former Major League Baseball player who played for the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, is the Republican nominee for Texas’ 21st Congressional District. He won the March Republican primary with about 61% of the vote, avoiding a runoff.
The seat is open following U.S. Rep. Chip Roy’s decision not to seek reelection. Roy, a Republican who has represented the district since 2019, instead ran for Texas attorney general. Roy advanced to the Republican primary runoff for attorney general but lost to state Sen. Mayes Middleton on May 26.
The 21st Congressional District includes all of Bandera, Blanco, Comal, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr and Real counties, along with portions of Bexar and Hays counties. The district includes communities such as Bandera, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Boerne and New Braunfels, as well as portions of San Antonio.
Virdell represents Texas House District 53, which includes Bandera County and much of the surrounding Hill Country. He is a Republican and serves on the House Criminal Jurisprudence, Juvenile Justice, Disaster Preparedness and Flooding, and Land and Resource Management committees.
The November election will determine who succeeds Roy in representing the district in the U.S. House. Teixeira will face Democratic nominee Kristin Hook, who lists her residence in Pipe Creek, in the Nov. 3 general election.
