The Bandera Bulldogs opened the 2026 regular season Friday night, Aug. 28, with a 36-24 loss to the Fredericksburg Billies on the road.
After a lightning delay pushed kickoff back, the Bulldogs finally took the field at 8 p.m. in front of a packed and electric Fredericksburg crowd, battling throughout the night in their season opener.
The Bulldogs got their scoring started in the first quarter as Breydan Gherman found the end zone on the ground.
Gherman continued to make an impact through the air, hauling in a touchdown pass from quarterback Dalton Parks.
Parks also connected with Remington Galloway for a receiving touchdown as the Bulldogs' offense continued to make plays throughout the night.
Jaymin Klein led the Bulldogs' receiving attack, finishing with more than 100 yards receiving and providing a consistent target for the Bandera offense.
Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by brothers Jonah and Jaymin Klein. The two combined for 15 total tackles, with Jonah recording eight tackles and Jaymin adding seven.
Despite the loss, Bandera showed plenty of fight in its first regular-season test and gave itself an opportunity to learn and grow from the experience.
“It was a great atmosphere Friday night at Fredericksburg. It was everything you could want out of a season opener, except for the win,” said Head Coach Fontenot-Amedee. “We found out a lot about ourselves and we are working to fix what needs fixing. We believe that we can be a very good football team, but we aren’t quite where we will be yet.”
The Bulldogs' first road game of the season also brought strong support from the Bandera faithful, who waited through the lightning delay and stayed to cheer on their team.
“Thanks to everyone who stuck around after the delay to cheer on the Bulldogs!” Fontenot-Amedee said.
The Bulldogs will now return home for their first home game of the 2026 season. Bandera will host the Hondo Owls Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. Results were not available by press time.
The home opener will also serve as Veterans Night, giving the Bandera community an opportunity to honor and recognize the veterans who have served our country.
