The Bandera County unit of the Hill Country League of Women Voters is preparing for two upcoming Voter 101 training sessions in Bandera County, giving residents two opportunities to learn more about voting and the election process.
The first session will be held Aug. 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the Rodney Camp Pavilion in Medina. The second will be Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Kronkosky Public Library in Bandera.
Heather Farmer will present both sessions. Farmer is the educational officer for the Hill Country League of Women Voters, a former teacher and currently works with the Kerr County Elections Office.
The Voter 101 sessions were among the upcoming activities discussed when the Bandera County unit met Aug. 6 at the Hen’s Nest in Bandera. Eight members attended, along with Bonnie Sharp, a representative of American Legion Post 157 in Bandera.
The League of Women Voters is a strictly nonpartisan organization.

with Leadership Team Coordinator Janice Zitelman reviewing the mission and diversity, equity and inclusion policy of the parent organization. The Hill Country League of Women Voters is divided into six county sections: Bandera, Gillespie, Kerr, Llano, Kendall and Blanco.
Members also previewed the League's upcoming candidate forum, scheduled for Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Silver Sage Great Room.
Zitelman reminded members that the forum will be limited to state candidates. The races included are Texas Senate District 24, Texas House District 53 and 4th Court of Appeals chief justice.
The Senate District 24 race is between Pete Flores and Joann Herrera. The House District 53 race is between Wesley Virdell and Carrie Hartmann, and the 4th Court of Appeals chief justice race is between Sandee Marion Richardson and Barbara Hervey Arteaga.
Zitelman said if both candidates in a race do not accept the League's invitation, that portion of the forum will be canceled. She again emphasized that the League is completely nonpartisan.
The group's general meeting schedule also was included in the agenda. The next meeting of the full Hill Country League will be Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Kerrville Riverside Nature Center at 9:30 a.m.
Bandera member Nancy Dyer reported on the July 18 meeting of the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District. She said BCRAGD proposed opening two additional wells to track water data for the county. BCRAGD would be responsible for maintaining and managing the wells with support from a state grant.
Bandera unit member Patricia Meronoff reported on the County Commissioners meeting.
Dyer and Ann Valentino also reported on their participation in the July 25 Back to School Bash, where they provided voter registration materials to parents and high school students.
Of the 700 people who attended the event, the League members spoke with 128 citizens. Students were given League name tags for their new backpacks. Valentino and Dyer said the event sponsors were accommodating and helped the League's representatives immensely.
The group also heard from Valentino about “The Forum,” a new civic organization founded by actor Andrew Shue. The organization's mission is to bring citizens together at the state level to facilitate discussion of common concerns.
Before the meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m., Zitelman reminded members that the League is sponsoring a citizen training session in San Antonio Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The training, titled “Let's Talk About It: Communication Skills for Difficult Conversations,” will be held at the Alamo Colleges District ACCESS Building.
The next meeting of the Bandera County unit of the Hill Country League of Women Voters will be Thursday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m. at the Hen’s Nest in Bandera.
