Gov. Greg Abbott joined state and local officials Thursday for the ribbon cutting of the newest Bucee’s location in San Marcos, where he highlighted the company’s economic contributions and expansion across the country.
Abbott delivered remarks and presented a proclamation at the ceremony celebrating the opening of the 74,000-squarefoot store.
“The Texas dream is the result of generations who came before us — the businesses they built, the communities they created, and the legacies they left behind,” Abbott said. “Bucee’s is a beacon of Texas hospitality. The grand opening of Buc-ee’s in San Marcos marks an extraordinary day in the company’s history, and I congratulate them on this tremendous success.”
The San Marcos location is expected to create more than 170 jobs. Abbott also noted that Buc-ee’s ranks among the top five U.S. retailers for entry-level salaries.
During the ceremony, Abbott presented a proclamation recognizing Bucee’s to company Founder and President Arch “Beaver” Aplin and participated in the ribbon cutting.
Abbott also joined Buc-ee’s employees in the company’s “Brisket on the Board” tradition, slicing and serving brisket to customers.
San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson, state Sen. Judith Zaffirini, San Marcos Director of Economic and Local Business Development Helen Ramirez and other state and local officials also attended the ceremony.
Founded in Texas in 1982, Buc-ee’s has expanded from its Texas roots to nearly 60 stores nationwide. The San Marcos opening brings the company’s total number of locations to nearly 60 across the country, according to the governor’s office.
The new store is the company’s latest expansion as Buc-ee’s continues to grow its large-format travel centers and Texas-based brand beyond the state.
