The Frontier Times Museum is launching a new weekly educational program this school year, giving students hands on opportunities to explore history, science, art and literature every Friday afternoon.
Beginning in August, Fridays at the Museum will be held from noon to 2 p.m. each Friday throughout the school year. Officials say the program was designed with Bandera ISD students in mind but is free and open to all students.
According to a museum news release, each Friday will feature a different educational activity built around one of four rotating themes: Arts & Crafts, STEM, Social Studies and Language Arts.
'With something new every week, students will have countless opportunities to explore history and science and be creative in a fun and engaging environment,' the release stated.
The August schedule includes:
• Aug. 7: Zine Workshop, where students will create miniature booklets filled with stories, artwork, comics or other creative projects.
• Aug. 14: Trinket Exhibit, which challenges students to become museum curators by designing miniature exhibits with shoeboxes and keepsakes while learning how museums tell stories through artifacts.
• Aug. 21: Circle of Life and Food Webs, where students will choose an animal, create a themed hat or headband, and discover how organisms fit into food chains and ecosystems.
• Aug. 28: Historical Detective, an interactive mystery in which students examine historic photographs, documents and artifacts to determine who the items may have belonged to. Children must be accompanied by an adult. One accompanying adult will receive free admission with each participating child.
'Whether your child enjoys creating art, solving mysteries, exploring science, or learning about history, Fridays at the Museum offers something for everyone,' the release stated. 'Join us this August as we celebrate learning through hands on discovery and make history come alive one Friday at a time.'
The Frontier Times Museum is located at 510 13th St. in Bandera and is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A complete schedule of fall activities is available on the museum's website.
