With each new generation that comes along they will have fond memories of what growing up in Bandera was like for them in their later years.
From my current vantage point I can't see anything in current times that will come close in comparison to the young life my generation experienced back in the day.
I guess dragging Main and seeing the same sights and people day after day and night after night paints a pretty dull picture for today's young folks. I often wonder if the old Bantex theater or the Corner Drug Store's fountain drinks would even appeal to them.
Do they still have sock hops in the bandroom or gym at Bandera High School like they did in the 50's and 60's? Do teens even wear socks in their tennies these days? I'm finding it more and more difficult to follow fashion trends these days.
I can see where doing the twist on a hardwood floor with tennies instead of socks might be a little difficult. IYKYK.
Tennies being the everyday and everywhere choice of shoes during our current times makes it unnecessary to kick off your shoes to cross the gym floor in your socks like we did back in the day.
I haven't been to a Bulldog football game since we attended the game in Waco where Bandera won their state championship.
The old home stadium in town just never felt the same after the changes were made that eliminated the game night crew on the visitor's sideline made up of Ray Wharton and his brother Wayne along with Wiley D'Spain and Wayne Ruede.
They were joined by a few others too following the line of scrimmage movement up and down the field while hootin' and hollerin' about every play. It was quite a spectacle watching and hearing them from the home side bleachers.
Does anyone run a dead skunk up on the flagpole at the school anymore on Halloween? In our wold today that would probably be considered a felony.
Greasing the pole would surely be labeled an environmental disaster. Back in the day Richard Braden was labeled a hero in such situations as he would eagerly volunteer to shinny up the pole and save the day.
I experienced the life of a high school parent when my son went through the BISD system back in the 80's. I could still relate to a lot of the happenings during that time and so he survived it and I did too. I could predict things before they happened.
Then when my granddaughter lived with us as she did her high school stint later on I started praying a lot more.
During that time my wife kept telling me that she would rather raise three boys than have to raise one girl. The times had certainly changed and I had zero clue about what to expect from day to day but again, I survived.
As it turned out we all survived and I just kept growing up in Bandera.
Hopefully I can watch from somewhere in the distance while some or all of my three great grands get through school and leave their mark on this old world.
