Boerne ISD backs accelerated Texas 46 improvements

Boerne Independent School District trustees unanimously approved a resolution June 15 supporting efforts to accelerate planned safety improvements along Texas 46 West between Interstate 10 and Texas 16.

The resolution asks the Texas Department of Transportation to expedite projects already planned for the corridor, which is used daily by students, families, employees and school buses.

The action follows presentations from community members and ongoing discussions about safety on the two-lane roadway, which connects Boerne and Bandera County and has been the site of multiple fatal and serious injury crashes in recent years.

According to information previously presented by TxDOT to Kendall County commissioners, the agency plans a series of improvements along the corridor, including centerline rumble strips, pavement marking upgrades, roadway resurfacing, a four-foot centerline buffer, turn lanes at several intersections and a barrier at Webster's Corner.

Immediate improvements, including rumble strips and additional warning signs, are expected to begin this summer. A larger project is scheduled to be bid in September 2027.

Board President Courtney Darter-Bruce said the resolution reflects the district's concern for those who travel the corridor.

'The safety of our students, staff, families, and school transportation operations remains one of our highest priorities,' Darter- Bruce said.

The resolution was prompted in part by information presented by community advocate Brad Dobson regarding crash data and planned improvements. Trustees thanked Dobson for bringing the issue before the board.

According to the resolution, school buses travel SH 46 West daily and students are picked up and dropped off at locations along the corridor.

The measure does not authorize district spending or operational changes but serves as an expression of support for accelerating projects already identified by TxDOT.

Superintendent Kristin Craft said the district has a responsibility to advocate for student and employee safety.

Boerne ISD joins Kendall County, Bandera County and other stakeholders in supporting continued safety improvements along Texas 46 West.
