Outdoor group shares summer lawn mower safety tips

Special to the Bulletin

With lawn mowing season in full swing, the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute is reminding homeowners to prioritize safety when using lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws and other yard equipment.

The trade association issued its annual summer safety reminder June 22, encouraging users to familiarize themselves with their equipment and follow manufacturers' recommendations.

'We all want our yards looking top-notch for picnics, parties and relaxing, but remember to learn the safety features and adopt safe practices when using your mower and other outdoor power equipment,' OPEI President and CEO Kris Kiser said in a statement. 'Follow manufacturers' guidance. It sounds basic, but it's important.'

Before mowing, OPEI recommends inspecting yards for rocks, sticks, toys and other debris that could become hazards. Users should also note steep slopes, holes and low-hanging branches and inspect equipment for damaged or missing parts.

The organization advises reading owner's manuals, regularly servicing equipment and storing machinery in a clean, dry place.

When handling fuel, users should allow engines to cool before refueling and avoid storing equipment with old gasoline in the tank. Battery-powered equipment should be charged using manufacturer-approved chargers and stored according to instructions.

OPEI also recommends wearing closed-toed shoes, long pants, safety glasses and hearing protection while operating equipment. Children and pets should be kept away from running machinery, and users should never remove or disable safety devices.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute represents manufacturers and suppliers of outdoor power equipment, engines and battery systems and serves as a standards development organization for the American National Standards Institute.
