Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Veterans Commission announced June 2 that $40.8 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will be distributed to organizations providing services to veterans and their families across Texas.
The funding will support 190 grants awarded to 160 nonprofit organizations and local government agencies statewide.
According to the Texas Veterans Commission, the grants are expected to serve more than 125,000 veterans and family members during the 2026-27 grant cycle.
“Texas is proud to provide crucial services to support the brave men and women who selflessly served our nation in uniform,” Abbott said in a news release. “Through this more than $40 million in state grants, we strengthen services for Texas veterans, their families and surviving spouses, while we empower local organizations to provide critical care and support across our great state.”
Texas Veterans Commission Chairwoman Laura Koerner, a Navy veteran, said the grants provide critical support for veterans throughout the state.
“The impact of these grants is tremendous,” Koerner said. “Tens of thousands of veterans and their families across Texas receive vital services and assistance from these organizations.”
The grants help fund a variety of services, including clinical counseling, housing assistance, financial assistance, legal aid, transportation, food services, home modifications, mental health programs, trade skills training, service dog programs, veteran treatment courts and veterinary care for veterans.
Veterans, dependents and surviving spouses seeking assistance can search for organizations serving their county through the Grant Services Directory at: tvc.texas.gov/directory/ directory-category/grants/ Funding for the grants is generated primarily through Texas Lottery games designated for veteran support.
Additional funding comes from voluntary donations made through driver's licenses, handgun carry licenses, hunting and fishing licenses, and vehicle registrations.
Since 2009, more than $400 million has been awarded through 1,790 Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants, according to the Texas Veterans Commission.
The Texas Veterans Commission assists veterans with obtaining benefits, provides funding to organizations that offer direct services to veterans and administers the Hazlewood Act education benefit program.
