Local church leaders, veterans organizations and community members gathered on the Bandera County Courthouse lawn Thursday, May 7, to observe the National Day of Prayer with music, prayer and remarks focused on unity and service.
The annual event, now in its fifth year in Bandera County, was organized by American Legion Post 157 in partnership with local churches and volunteers, according to organizers. The National Day of Prayer was established by federal law in 1952, designating the first Thursday in May as a day of national observance.
Organizers said the local ceremony was intended to bring together residents from different churches and backgrounds to pray for families, first responders, military personnel, veterans, elected officials and the nation.
The event began with a presentation of colors by members of local youth organizations Trail Life Troop TX-9112 and American Heritage Girls Troop TX-4567. Retired U.S. Army Capt. Shikesha Colony performed the national anthem, while worship music throughout the evening was provided by Oasis Family Church singers and other local musicians, organizers said.
Prayer speakers included Pastor Andy Loos of Oasis Family Church, Pastor Daryl Cheswick of Sonrise Christian Fellowship, Chaplain Mark Caronna of the “Ask the Chaplain” radio program, retired Army chaplain Jeff “Jefe” Smith of the American Legion Riders, missionary Kenny O’Bannon of Building Hope International and Minister Kevin Ayers of Medina Community Church.
According to organizers, the event was first launched locally by Caronna, a retired Houston police officer, before leadership of the annual observance was assumed by the American Legion post.
The evening concluded with attendees helping clean up the courthouse lawn following the program. Organizers said they plan to continue the annual event next year and encouraged additional churches and community groups to participate.
