Voting opens Monday for county judge runoff

Early voting for Texas’ May 26 primary runoff election opens Monday, giving Bandera County voters their first opportunity to cast ballots in several closely watched local and statewide races.

Early voting will run May 18-22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Bandera County. Voters may cast ballots at the Ray Mauer Annex, 403 12th St. in Bandera, the Lakehills Area Library, 7200 FM 1283 in Lakehills, or the Medina Annex, 161 E. Parker St. in Medina.

Election Day is scheduled for May 26. Polls across the county will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Locally, Bandera County voters will decide the Republican runoff for county judge between Susan Junker and Dennis Fitzgerald after no candidate secured a majority in the March 3 primary election.

Junker led the three-candidate field with 2,074 votes, or 42.3%, followed by Fitzgerald with 1,457 votes, or 29.7%. Candidate Kim Manglberger received 1,372 votes, or 28%.

Under Texas election law, candidates must receive more than 50% of the vote to win a party nomination outright. Because no candidate reached that threshold, the top two finishers advanced to the runoff election.

Statewide, several high-profile Republican races also remain undecided following the March primary. Republican voters will decide the U.S. Senate runoff between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Other statewide runoff races include the Railroad Commissioner contest between incumbent James Wright and challenger Bo French, along with the attorney general runoff between State Sen. Mayes Middleton and U.S. Rep. Chip Roy.

Texas voters had until April 27 to register or update voter information ahead of the runoff election. Applications for ballots by mail must be received by May 15, according to the county election notice.
