As spring approaches, the TurfMutt Foundation is encouraging homeowners to prepare their backyards for warmer weather with an emphasis on outdoor living, wildlife support and family- friendly landscaping.
The organization said yards can serve as an extension of the home by providing space for recreation, relaxation and outdoor entertainment.
Among the group’s recommendations is evaluating outdoor equipment before the season begins, including lawn mowers, leaf blowers and trimmers. The foundation also suggested considering upgrades such as smart irrigation systems.
The group encouraged homeowners to plant grass, trees, shrubs and flowers that support birds, pollinators and other wildlife.
“There are many species of turfgrass,” the foundation stated, recommending homeowners consult local garden centers or landscapers to determine which varieties work best for children and pets.
The organization also encouraged families to plan outdoor spaces for recreation and gatherings, including features such as fire pits, pergolas, sandboxes and decorative water elements.
The TurfMutt Foundation, created by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, marked its 15th anniversary in 2024. Since 2009, the organization says it has reached more than 70 million children, educators and families through environmental education efforts focused on outdoor spaces.
The foundation is also the title sponsor of the CBS television program “Lucky Dog,” which promotes dog rescue and rehabilitation.
