Peterson Health has been named one of the top 20 rural and community hospitals in the nation, according to the National Rural Health Association.

The designation recognizes high-performing prospective payment system hospitals based on an evaluation by the Chartis Center for Rural Health.

Rankings are determined using the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, which assesses hospitals on eight measures: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge and finance.

The hospitals will be honored May 21 during the association’s annual Rural Health Conference in San Diego.

Peterson Health is the only hospital in Texas to make the top 20 list this year.

“We are incredibly proud of the efforts of our physicians, providers and staff from across the organization whose hard work has led to this designation,” said John McDonald, president and CEO of Peterson Health. “It reinforces that our dedication to high-quality care, a team-centered culture and patient experience is serving us and our community very well.”

Mary Liz Eastland, chair of Peterson Health’s board of directors, said the recognition reflects the organization’s commitment to patient care.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication, compassion and clinical excellence of our entire team,” Eastland said. “This achievement confirms our mission and inspires us to continue innovating to provide exceptional care for every patient we serve.”

Peterson Health is a nonprofit, independent health network based in Kerrville. Founded in 1949, it serves patients across nine counties in the Texas Hill Country and operates 19 facilities throughout the region.
