Editor’s Note: This letter is in response to an article from last week’s e-edition.
Dear Editor: (re: Crab trap removal program hauls nearly 1,000 traps, March 18) The removal of nearly 1,000 abandoned crab traps from Texas waters is a welcome effort to protect marine life. But while these devices continue to “ghost fish” and harm countless animals, we shouldn’t overlook their intended victims: crabs.
Crabs are not disposable commodities— they are intelligent, sensitive animals who learn, navigate complex environments and experience pain. Being trapped, injured or killed in fishing gear is not a minor inconvenience for them—it’s a profound loss.
Efforts to clean up discarded traps are important, but real progress means recognizing that crabs’ lives matter, too. Every animal is someone.
Sincerely, Scott Miller Research Specialist, Fishing & Waterways The PETA Foundation
