League of Women Voters meeting Saturday

The League of Women Voters of the Hill Country Texas will host a public meeting Saturday, March 28, featuring a presentation on the history of the women’s suffrage movement in Texas.

The event will take place in the Fest Room at Marktplatz, located at 100 West Main Street in Fredericksburg. A social hour with light refreshments begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the business meeting and program at 10:00 a.m..

Bunny Bond, president of the Hill Country League of Women Voters, will present “Commemorating Women’s History Month: The Suffrage Movement in Texas.”

The program highlights pivotal moments in state history, including the 1918 law allowing women to vote in primary elections.

Following that legislation, approximately 386,000 Texas women registered to vote in just 17 days.

The presentation will also cover the June 28, 1919, resolution by the Texas Legislature to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Bond, a University of Texas graduate and former educator, previously served as the Director of Rehab at Kerrville State Hospital.

A Kerrville resident since 1985, she remains active with the Kerr County Historical Commission and various mental health boards.

The Hill Country Texas League has served the region for 46 years, with members spanning Bandera, Blanco, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, and Llano counties. As a non-partisan, non-profit organization, the League focuses on voter registration and education rather than endorsing specific candidates.

Meetings are free and open to the public. Those unable to attend in person may join via Zoom by emailing president@lwvhillcountrytexas. org. Membership is open to anyone aged 16 and older.
