Lakehills Area Library joins Texas America250 Reading Challenge

The Lakehills Area Library is inviting residents of all ages to take part in the statewide Texas America250 Reading Challenge, a yearlong program encouraging reading, service and outdoor exploration in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

“We look forward to joining Texans across the state reading, volunteering and visiting our beautiful Texas state parks as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Lakehills Area Library Director Dianna Landes.

The challenge, organized in partnership with the Texas Center for the Book and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, began Jan. 1 and will continue through Dec. 31.

Participants are encouraged to log 2,500 minutes — about 41.6 hours — of activities such as reading, volunteering or visiting state parks as part of the national America250 America Gives initiative.

Those who complete the challenge are eligible to receive a certificate signed by Greg Abbott. The program is self-reported, and participants may track their time using the “Mosey Along the Reading Trail” log available at the library, their own reading log or another method.

Completed logs can be reported to a local librarian to receive an official certificate.

“The library is delighted to empower our community to celebrate and learn our nation’s history with this Reading Challenge,” said Landes. “Also, as a part of the America250 celebration, from April 20th until July 6th, the library will have an America250 display provided by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Please come in and check out the display, pick up your log, or get your certificate of completion.

Participants can count time spent reading books or listening to audiobooks, attending library storytimes or events, volunteering in their communities, or visiting a Texas state park.

The Texas Center for the Book encourages participants to read works related to Texas and American history, nature, wildlife and space exploration.

More information about the challenge and guidelines is available at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission website. The project is supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
