Junior Ruby Lister punched her ticket to the state championships with a silver-medal performance at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association Region 5 Championships on March 3 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
Lister finished second in a tightly contested division, missing the top spot by just 15 pounds while posting an impressive 925-pound total. Her performance included a personal-best 415-pound squat, a 175-pound bench press and a 335-pound deadlift.
By finishing on the podium and reaching the state-qualifying total, Lister secured a spot at the THSWPA State Championships, which will be held March 18–21 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
The Bandera High School girls powerlifting team faced some of the top lifters in the region at the meet, with several Lady Bulldogs turning in personal- best performances.
Emily VanDeWalle finished seventh overall with a 620-pound total, setting personal records in each lift with a 235-pound squat, a 135-pound bench press and a 250-pound deadlift.
Eva Le placed sixth overall with a 505-pound total. Her performance was highlighted by a 215-pound squat and a personal-best 185-pound deadlift.
With the regional meet complete, Lister will return to Edinburg during spring break to represent Bandera at the state championships. Coaches praised the team’s effort and the number of personal records achieved during the regional competition.
